Making Orange Peels Useful

My kids love Clementines, a lot. I have always thought the peels smell delicious and it was a shame there wasn’t something I could do with them. Thanks to a Facebook post floating around I now have the perfect solution which also solves my other problem of my vinegar + water + essential oils cleaning solution not smelling so good.

Orange Scented Household Cleaner

  • Put your orange peels (or clementine peels like I did) in a mason jar
  • Fill the mason jar with vinegar
  • Put the lid of the jar on tightly
  • Wait 2 weeks
  • Strain the vinegar and put in your spray bottle

Tah dah! Nice smelling, Green cleaner.

I am thinking of doing a post on all the ways I use my mason jars. How do you use your mason jars?

Powdered Laundry Detergent – Recipe

Blog pictures 037

I didn’t have any Fels Naptha on hand so the soap in this picture is Ivory.

I think of all the things I make at home this is my favorite. It saves me a bundle and it works great.

Powdered Laundry Detergent

2 parts finely grated Fels-Naptha soap bar ( you can also use Ivory or Zote)
1 part Borax
1 part Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda

Of course there are many variations of this recipe. This is just the most basic. Other things you can include are:

  • Baking Soda (different from washing soda, I get it in bulk from my local co-op)
  • Oxiclean (recycle the container or use it to store your detergent)

To Use

Simply add 1 Tablespoon to your laundry. If it is a really big load or heavily soiled, use 2 Tablespoons but since this is concentrated detergent you do not need more than that.

*Tip*: Before grating the soap bar, unwrap it and let it sit out until it has dried out some. This will make the grating process much easier. If you don’t do this it will be sticky and difficult to grate.
